Pamela’s House before and after:

Housing Projects:

We built 4 houses for widows and their children. A house cost around $700.

House 1: Mary has 3 children and lived in her mother in-law’s kitchen. Mary and her children were separated as there was not enough room for them in the kitchen, which is a small 2m by 2m mud hut, constantly filled with smoke. Mary’s eldest son was considered old enough to care for himself, and roamed for shelter day to day, and her youngest lived with relatives in another village. We built a house for Mary and her family on the grounds of her in laws, and they were together again.

House 2: Pamela has 6 children, and has been widowed for 3 years. In these three years she and her six children lived in a small mud hut, which was falling down. There was only enough room for the family to sit up to sleep on hessian bags. When we finished building her house, the children continually stepped out the size of their new house, and couldn’t believe how big it was.

House 3: Layer has four of her own children and two orphans. She is a hard working mother, and was currently living in a falling down abandoned house. For Layer we built her a new house and a sheep pen for her to breed local sheep for some income.

House 4: Jenifer and her family were also living in a falling down mud hut with a leaking thatched roof. They were unable to touch this hut as it is Kenyan law that once your husband dies, you do not have any rights to the original house. Jenifer was very happy with her new house.

We also surprised the families with water tanks, mattresses, mosquito nets, food and toys for the children.

Water Tank:

We bought a 5000L water tank for the community centre in Mutumbu which will provide clean drinking water for the people of the community. The community centre provides education to many women’s groups and runs classes for children in the holidays.

Total for this project $1400

Goat Pen:

We built a goat pen for another community centre in Hono which supports a church group, a choir and a women’s group. The milk from these goats, and the breeding program will enable these groups to have a small income to further develop their learning.

Total for this project $1200
